Is a tortilla a good alternative for a pizza base?

Tortillas can be a good alternative for a pizza base for babies instead of using pizza dough, especially for this tortilla pizza roll ups recipe within the framework of baby-led weaning.

They are soft, flexible, and easy for little hands to hold, which encourages self-feeding.

Tortillas also cook quickly and require minimal preparation, making them a convenient option for busy parents.

When using tortillas as a base, choose white or wholewheat options without added salt or sugar to keep them healthy.

Top with baby-friendly ingredients such as grated cheese, mashed or grated vegetables, or soft fruit purees that are appropriate for your baby's age and dietary needs.

This makes for a nutritious, easy-to-handle meal that is both fun and fuss-free. Simple recipes are always the best in my opinion!

    Are tortillas ok for baby?

Tortillas can be a suitable finger food option for babies, especially when introducing them to solid foods during the baby-led weaning stage.

It is important to choose soft, plain tortillas made from ideally whole grains without added salt or sugar.

Before offering tortillas to your baby, cut them into strips or roll ups, to reduce any choking risk.

Avoid tortillas with strong spices or toppings that might be too harsh for a baby’s developing digestive system at this time.

Always supervise your baby while eating and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about potential allergens or specific dietary needs.

    Ingredient information

Tortillas - I have used white mini tortillas for this recipe, but you can use wholemeal or even use the larger tortillas wraps if you are making this recipe for the whole family.

Tomato puree - I have used a tomato puree for this recipe as the tomato sauce base as it works really well for flavour and doesn’t really leave any mess behind when eating like a regular pizza sauce would.

Cheese - I have used a mature cheddar cheese for the recipe but mozzarella cheese, string cheese or red Leicester cheese will work really well too.

    Storage instructions

The tortilla pizza rolls can be kept in the fridge in airtight containers or a freezer-bag for up to 3 days in the fridge.

Or you can freeze the roll ups in a freezer bag or an airtight container for up to 3 months. Which is great as you will always have a lunch, dinner or snack in the freezer ready to be defrosted for a quick meal or snack.

If you want to defrost the best way to do this is to take the tortillas out of the freezer, and leave in the fridge overnight until fully thawed.

The rolls are best eaten chilled, as they do not reheat to well, If you want to reheat you will need to heat in the oven on 180C or 350F for 5 minutes.

Once reheated the rolls will not be able to be frozen again.

This is a really quick and simple meal idea for baby for baby-led weaning. The recipe can be prepared very quickly so a great recipe if you are in a rush.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by heating up your grill and line a baking sheet with foil. Or you pop into the air fryer on 200C for 1-2 minutes.
    2. Take your tortillas and spread a teaspoon of the tomato puree on each of the tortillas until they are covered evenly.
    3. Next sprinkle over the cheddar cheese on each tortilla and place both on your prepared baking sheet next to each other leaving a little gap.
    4. Pop under the hot grill for 1-2 minutes. Do not leave unattended as they only need a couple of minutes for the cheese to melt.
    5. Once the cheese has melted, remove from the grill and roll each of the tortillas up until you get a long finger sized tortilla roll.
    6. Cut the tortillas into 8 pieces in total (I remove the ends) and make sure they are cool enough to serve straight away to baby or kids.

    Notes

You can use a gluten-free wrap for gluten-free babies.

Feel free to use a dairy free cheese for vegan/dairy free babies.

You can add other toppings such as shredded chicken, garlic powder, extra cheese such as mozzarella or grated carrot to mix things up.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
