Can a Baby Have a Breadstick

Yes, a baby can have a breadstick, but homemade breadsticks are a much better option than shop-bought ones.

Homemade breadsticks tend to have a soft, dough-like texture, making them easier for little ones to gnaw on and digest safely.

In contrast, shop-bought breadsticks are often hard and crunchy, which can pose a choking hazard and be difficult for babies to manage.

Preparing breadsticks at home allows you to control the ingredients and texture, ensuring a gentle introduction to new textures during baby-led weaning.

    Are Breadsticks Unhealthy For Baby

Breadsticks can be appropriate for baby-led weaning (BLW) if chosen carefully, but they are not always the healthiest option if they are store-bought.

Many breadsticks are made with refined flour and contain added salt or sugars, which are not ideal for babies.

They can be quite dry and hard, making it hard to chew foods, posing a common choking hazard in baby’s mouth, which can be scary for new parents.

If offering breadsticks, opt for those made from wholegrain bread flours with minimal additives and ensure they are soft enough for your baby to chew safely.

Which is why they are best homemade and great for those savvy savers with a small amount of money.

Always supervise feeding closely and consider offering a variety of softer, nutrient-rich finger foods such as BLW chicken drumstick and crudites with dip to support balanced nutrition.

    Ingredient information

Yogurt - I have used a plain Greek yogurt for this recipe as this is a great yogurt for weaning and beyond and a great ingredient for so many recipes such as oat bars and pancakes. You could just use warm water instead of the yogurt.

Plain flour - I have used plain flour for this recipe as I do not need the breadsticks to rise.

Mixed herbs - I have used a few mixed herbs to add flavour and garnish to the tops of the breadsticks.

Olive oil - I have used an extra virgin olive oil for the tops of the breadsticks to add colour when the breadsticks are cooked.

    Serving suggestion

The breadsticks would be great served with a dip such as a yogurt, cream cheese and lemon dip, houmous or an aubergine dip.

You could also serve the breadsticks with a side of veggie sticks and a great finger food style picky lunch.

Instead of the mixed herbs you could use sesame seeds for babies and toddlers 1-3 years for extra flavours.

Slow cooking chicken in a slow cooker can be a great main accompaniment for these bread sticks.

    Storage instructions

This bread sticks will last up to 5 days in an airtight container or airtight food bag, in a cool kitchen at room temperature.

If your kitchen gets too hot I would wrap the bread sticks in foil or keep them in the airtight container and pop in the fridge for storage.

You can freeze the bread sticks as well, so if you double the ingredients and make double the amount you can freeze the breadsticks for the next week.

Once the bread sticks have been frozen it is suggested that you do not re freeze the bread sticks.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean

Baking tray - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
