Can You Give Baby A Chicken Drumstick

Yes, you can introduce BLW chicken drumstick to new eaters from around six months old, provided you ensure they are cooked thoroughly and are soft enough for your little one to manage.

You can shred the meat into finger sized pieces, bite-sized pieces from around 8-9 months old or serve whole to minimise choking risks for a 6 month old baby.

As with any new food, monitor for any signs of allergies and always supervise your baby while they’re eating.

Drumsticks can be a great source of protein and iron, making them a nutritious choice as your baby explores a variety of flavours and textures through baby-led weaning.

Are Chicken Drumsticks a choking hazard?

Chicken drumsticks can pose a choking hazard for infants from around six months old, primarily due to their size, shape, and texture.

At this age, babies are typically starting on solid foods but are still developing their chewing skills.

While some families may choose to offer drumsticks as part of baby-led weaning, it is crucial to ensure that the meat is cooked until tender, and the bone is not given to the child.

Parents should monitor their little ones closely, offering the drumstick meat, to reduce the risk of choking and to promote safe eating practices.

    Chicken Baby Led Weaning Benefits

Chicken drumsticks are an excellent choice for baby-led weaning due to their rich flavour, tender texture, and nutritional benefits.

They are a good source of protein, which is essential for your baby's growth and development, as well as providing vital nutrients like iron and zinc that support healthy immune function.

The bone-in nature of drumsticks allows for easy holding, making them perfect for little hands to grasp and explore.

The skin adds a delightful crispiness that can encourage your child to engage with new tastes and textures, promoting healthy eating habits from an early age.

Cooking them until tender ensures that they are easy for your baby to chew, making chicken drumsticks an ideal option for introducing meat into your little one's diet.

    Ingredient information

Chicken - I have used chicken drumsticks for this recipe as they are a great way to introduce baby to baby led weaning. They cook really well and they can be picked up by baby as a great finger food from 6 months old.

Paprika - I have used paprika as it is packed with flavour but is a mild spice that can be introduced from 6 months old, a great option!

Garlic granules - You can leave this out if you prefer, but adding a little bit of garlic adds such an extra hit of flavour to the chicken drumsticks.

Olive oil - I have used extra virgin olive oil for this recipe, you could use coconut oil or avocado oil too if you prefer.

    Serving suggestion

The drumsticks would be great served on their own or if you wanted to serve as a complete meal you could serve with mashed potato or sweet potato wedges or oven tater tots.

    Storage instructions

The drumsticks can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.

If you wanted to freeze the drumsticks, you will need to wait until the drumsticks have cooled to room temperature, before transferring to an airtight container or a freezer safe bag.

Be sure to label the container or freezer bag with the item and date.

To reheat the drumsticks, preheat your oven to 180C or 350F and reheat for up to 20-25 minutes, but be careful before serving to your baby, make sure it is cooled down before serving.

You will not be able to refreeze once defrosted and reheated.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

Baking sheet - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

    Notes

If you are worried about giving your baby spices especially if this is one of your baby’s first foods from 6 months of age, you can just add the olive oil to the chicken and cook without any spices or garlic.

Other herbs and spices you can use can be smoked paprika, oregano, cumin and coriander.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
