Easy Tuna and Cottage Cheese Lunch Idea For Babies

When can baby have tuna
Babies can start eating tuna from around six months old, provided it is introduced as part of a varied diet and prepared safely.
It is important to choose tuna that is low in mercury, such as canned light tuna, and to serve it in small, manageable portions.
Tuna should be well-cooked or canned in spring water, mashed or flaked to avoid choking hazards.
Always watch for any allergic reactions when introducing fish for the first time.
Consulting with a healthcare professional before introducing tuna or any new food is advisable, especially if there is a family history of allergies.
Tuna and cottage cheese for baby
Tuna and cottage cheese make an excellent combination for baby-led weaning due to their complementary textures and nutritional benefits.
Tuna is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, essential for brain development, while cottage cheese provides calcium and additional protein in a soft, easy-to-chew form.
Together, they create a balanced, satisfying meal, flavourful dish that is gentle on little palates and simple for babies to grasp and self-feed.
This pairing also introduces a variety of tastes and textures, encouraging exploratory eating and a positive mealtime experience.
Ingredient information
Tuna - Tuna is a great weaning ingredient, so many yummy recipes can be created from tuna for baby such as a tuna cottage cheese bowl, fish cakes, classic tuna salad or on the flip side a tuna pasta bake.
Cottage cheese - I have used full-fat cottage cheese instead of a low-fat cottage cheese as it is a great weaning ingredient for healthy fats in place of mayo. You can blitz the tuna and cottage cheese together for a creamier texture if you like or use a plain Greek yogurt.
Bread - I have used a wholemeal bread for the recipe, but you can use any sliced bread you have such as white bread or sourdough bread (crusts removed).
Parsley - I have used parsley as a garnish you can leave this ingredient out or used fresh herbs if you like.
Serving suggestion
This is a great recipe if you needed a make ahead lunch or even a snack!
You can easily make the toppings and leave in the fridge for up to 3 days or use the ingredients as and when you may need to.
You could serve the toast as part of a lunch so some examples of additional lunch items could be, sliced cucumber, quartered cherry tomatoes, cheese batons, sliced bell pepper, sweet potato or some Greek yogurt.
Other recipes you may like: French toast, Hummus rolls or Cheesy roll ups.
Storage instructions
The toast can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the toast, you will need to make sure that the toast has cooled down at room temperature before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container.
You can freeze into individual portions if you prefer. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.
To defrost the toast, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that it is fully defrosted, before re heating.
Once the toast has been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or re freeze..
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
