How to give carrots for BLW
Carrots are a fantastic first food for baby-led weaning from around 6 months old due to their natural sweetness, bright orange colour and firm texture when cooked properly.
To prepare carrots safely for your little one, steam or boil them until soft but still holding their shape—this usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Cut the cooked carrots into finger-sized sticks or chunky batons that your baby can easily hold.
For recipe ideas, try steamed carrot sticks served alongside soft avocado slices for a creamy contrast, or mix mashed carrots with cream cheese to make a carrot pasta sauce.
You can also roast carrot batons lightly with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of mild herbs, ensuring they remain soft enough to chew.
Always supervise your baby while eating and introduce one new food at a time to monitor for any allergies.
Benefits of carrot for BLW
Carrots are an excellent first food for baby-led weaning from around six months old due to their natural sweetness and firm texture, which makes them easy for little hands to hold.
They are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, essential for healthy eyesight and immune function.
Large carrots provide dietary fibre that aids digestion and help develop chewing skills, promoting oral motor development.
Offering lightly steamed carrot sticks ensures they are soft enough to mash with gums while maintaining their shape, encouraging self-feeding and exploration of different textures.
Penne pasta for baby
Penne pasta is an excellent choice for baby-led weaning from 6 months old, as its size and shape make it easy for little hands to hold.
When cooked until soft, penne provides a safe texture for babies to chew and explore, encouraging self-feeding and development of oral motor skills.
It can be served plain or combined with mild, baby-friendly sauces such as pureed vegetables or gentle tomato sauce, ensuring it remains nutritious and flavourful.
Always ensure the pasta is cooked thoroughly and cut into manageable pieces to reduce any choking risk.
Ingredient information
Carrot - Fresh carrots are great for baby led weaning when cooked as they add a slight sweetness to recipes with babies love. In this recipe you can blitz the carrots in a food processor/immersion blender with a little water if you wanted a smooth sauce and the perfect sauce with a yummy creamy consistency.
Pasta - I have used penne pasta for the recipe, as penne pasta is a great weaning ingredient as it can be picked up easily by baby. You can use a different type of pasta such as an orzo pasta pasta shape.
Cream cheese - Full-fat cream cheese is a great simple ingredient that can be used in many yummy weaning recipes such as blueberry cream cheese muffins or strawberry cheesecake pinwheels. Simple ingredients are always the best.
Serving suggestion
The pasta recipe will be great served with tender stem broccoli and a little black pepper or maybe some homemade garlic bread. The best way to serve pasta.
You can also serve simply with extra veggies such as cucumber batons or red pepper slices and grated cheese. A quick meal idea for picky eaters.
Other pasta recipes you may like: Classic spaghetti bolognaise, Pumpkin pasta or Aubergine and courgette pasta. All delicious meal ideas for baby for pasta night.
Storage instructions
The creamy carrot pasta sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container, or you could use a container with plastic wrap to cover the pasta.
If you wanted to freeze the creamy carrot sauce pasta, you will need to store in an airtight container.
Make sure the creamy pasta sauce has cooled to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container to the freezer.
To defrost the easy carrot pasta sauce leave in the fridge overnight, and make sure it has fully defrosted.
To reheat the delicious carrot pasta recipe, transfer to a preheated oven on 180C or 350F and reheat on a medium-high heat.
Once the simple carrot pasta sauce has been defrosted and reheated you will not be able to re-freeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Notes
A delicious way you can switch up the recipe for dairy free babies, you use a plant based dairy free cream cheese instead of a dairy version or a little coconut milk.
Feel free to use other soft veggies instead of the carrot such as butternut squash, pumpkin or beetroot.
You can add some fresh herbs such as chopped basil or parsley, both being a great option for baby and toddler.
Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
