Are babies allowed to drink smoothies

Babies can have smoothies from six months old, but only in very small quantities to try and taste.

It is best to introduce a small amount initially to monitor for any adverse reactions or sensitivities.

Smoothies such as this apple and oat smoothie should be made with simple, natural ingredients and avoid added sugars or honey.

Always ensure the texture is appropriate for the baby’s stage of eating, focusing on smooth, easy-to-swallow blends that complement their introduction to solid foods.

    How to prepare a smoothie

To prepare a smoothie for your baby, start by selecting fresh, ripe fruits such as banana, pear, or peach, which are naturally sweet and gentle on little tummies.

Wash the fruit thoroughly, peel if necessary, and chop into small pieces.

Place the fruit in a blender and add a small amount of breast milk, formula, or cooled boiled water to achieve a smooth, thin consistency suitable for your baby's stage.

Blend until there are no lumps, ensuring the texture is safe and easy to swallow.

Avoid adding sugar or honey, and serve immediately to preserve nutrients and freshness.

    Ingredient information

Oats - Rolled oats or quick oats are great for baby led weaning, they are a great ingredient to use for many different recipes such as oaty bars.

Juicy apples - I have used a pre made apple puree suitable for babies for the recipe. I have used for convenience but if you wanted to make your own fresh apples apple sauce with no added sugar you absolutely can. Ripe bananas can be used instead of apples if you prefer.

Milk - I have used a whole milk for the recipe, you can use a dairy free alternative such as oat milk or a nut milk such as almond milk or cashew milk.
