Can Babies Have Red Lentils
Babies can have red lentils as a nutritious part of their diet, typically introduced around six months when they start solids.
Red lentils are soft, easy to digest, and rich in protein, iron, and fibre, making them an excellent choice for baby-led weaning.
When preparing red lentils for babies, ensure they are thoroughly cooked until very soft and pureed, mashed or a lentil patty recipe to avoid any choking hazard.
It is important to introduce new foods one at a time to monitor for any allergic reactions or sensitivities.
Red lentils can be combined with vegetables or mild spices to create a variety of wholesome and flavourful meals for little ones.
What To Serve With Red Lentil Patties
Red lentil patties pair well with a variety of soft, nutritious sides suitable for babies. You can serve them with steamed vegetables such as carrots, peas, or sweet potato cubes, which are easy to grasp and gently cooked to ensure they are tender.
Offering mashed avocado or a mild yoghurt dip can add creaminess and healthy fats.
Soft fruits like banana slices or cooked apple pieces also complement the savoury flavours while providing a balance of textures.
For added nutrition, a small portion of cooked quinoa or soft-cooked brown rice can round out the meal.
Ensure all accompaniments are cut into appropriate sizes for your baby’s developmental stage to encourage safe self-feeding.

Red lentils - Red lentils are so versatile and great baby led weaning recipe for baby and toddler. They are most famous in a dal recipe.
Flour - I have used a little flour for this recipe, you can also use almond flour or gluten-free flour for gluten-free babies.
Apple - I have used a little grated apple for sweetness that works so well in this recipe.
Olive oil - I have used a little olive oil for this recipe to fry the patties but you can use unsalted butter too or coconut oil.
Serving suggestion
The patties would be great served with sweet potato fries or skinny fries.
You can also serve a plain Greek yogurt dip for the patties for a nutritious yummy dip for the patties.
Other recipes you may like: Pork patties, Carrot fritters or apple fritters.
Storage instructions
If you are batch cooking these lentil patties recipe to store in the fridge or freezer, make sure that when cooked they have cooled fully before packing them into your airtight containers or freezer bags. They will keep up to 3 days in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer if stored correctly.
I find it easier to label the airtight container with masking tape and the freezer bag using a pen to write the item, and date.
To defrost the lentil cakes you will need to store in the fridge overnight in an airtight container to thaw, once thawed you can now reheat.
To reheat the lentil fritters, Pre heat your oven to 180C/350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper and re heat the patties for 10-15 minutes until heated through.
Once thawed and reheated you will not be able to defrost or reheat
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
