How To Cook Courgette For Baby

Courgette can be cooked for babies in several simple ways that suit baby-led weaning on their journey to starting solid foods from 6 months of age.

Steaming courgette until tender is a gentle method that preserves nutrients and results in soft, easily mashable pieces perfect for little hands to hold.

You can also roast courgette slices lightly with a drizzle of olive oil, which adds flavour and a slightly firmer texture for older babies developing their grip and chewing skills great for finger foods.

For younger babies or those starting on baby puree, boiling or frying courgette until very soft and then blending it into a smooth courgette puree baby recipe is ideal.

Adding a little water, breast milk, or formula can help achieve the desired consistency.

Courgette’s mild flavour makes it easy to combine with other veggies like carrot or potato for varied tastes and textures.

Do You Need To Peel Courgettes For Baby?

You do not usually need to peel courgettes for babies, especially when they are served cooked and softened.

The skin of courgettes is thin and contains valuable nutrients and fibre that contribute to a balanced diet.

However, if the courgette is particularly large or the skin feels tough, peeling might make it easier for your baby to chew and digest.

Always wash the courgette thoroughly before cooking, and prepare it in a size and texture suitable for your baby’s stage of eating.

    Ingredient information

Courgette - Courgettes are great for babies for baby led weaning, they are actually so versatile and you can make savoury fries to sweet muffins.

Olive oil - I have used a little extra virgin olive oil to cook the courgette pieces in, You could use a little unsalted butter or avocado oil too as alternatives.

Greek yogurt - Plain Greek yogurt is another weaning staple. Great for baby and great for adding into so many meals.

It is possible to freeze the pots, they can be frozen for up to 3 months. You can also use ice cube trays to portion the rhubarb puree to store in the freezer.

Make sure you leave the pots overnight in the fridge before serving.

Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.

Kilner jars - These are snack sized glass pots with easy push-on silicone lids which are water tight and leak-proof making them ideal for carrying light bites and snacks on-the-go.

Frying pan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
