Can 6 month old eat flapjacks

Six-month-old babies can enjoy homemade flapjacks especially these gingerbread flapjacks made from wholesome ingredients such as oats, banana, and Greek yogurt, provided there are no added sugars or honey.

They are not the same American flapjacks as these are American pancakes in England.

They are a gingerbread-mash up! It is a great recipe if baby is trying a flapjack for the first time.

At this stage, flapjacks should be soft and easy to chew, as babies are still developing their oral motor skills.

Oats offer a good source of fibre and energy, bananas provide natural sweetness and essential nutrients, while Greek yogurt adds protein and calcium.

Always ensure the flapjack texture suits the baby’s developmental stage and introduce new foods one at a time to monitor for any allergic reactions.

Supervision during eating is essential to prevent choking. The full recipe can be found below.

Easy snacks for on the go

Gingerbread flapjacks make the perfect snack on the go for babies from 6 months old due to their soft texture and naturally sweet flavour, which is appealing to little palates.

They are easy to hold, encouraging self-feeding and developing fine motor skills, while providing a nutritious combination of oats and warming spices that support sustained energy.

These chewy flapjack recipe also fit perfectly into lunchboxes, offering a wholesome, homemade alternative to processed snacks, making them a convenient and tasty option for busy families seeking balanced meals for their children.

    Ingredient information

Oats - Rolled oats are a great weaning ingredient and they are the main ingredient in this flapjack recipe. Packed with fibre too.

Banana - I have used a banana to sweeten the flapjacks slightly, you can use an applesauce instead if bananas are not your baby’s thing.

Yogurt - I have used a plain full-fat Greek to add protein , sweetness and moisture to the flapjack recipe.

Flaxseed - I have added flaxseed for added nutrition and you cannot taste it within the flapjacks too. You can blitz some pumpkin seeds in the food processor or you can use pumpkin seed butter for added nutrition.

Ginger - I have used ground ginger for the recipe, the amount used is subtle enough not to overpower the tastebuds. You can use a little stem ginger too. You can substitute the ground ginger with a little bit of ground cinnamon if you prefer.

    Serving suggestion

The oaty treats would be great served with a fruit puree or with a mango pot or drizzled with smooth peanut butter or your favourite nut butter.

You can simply serve the oaty bar cookie on their own as a snack on the go, breakfast on the go or as a lunchbox item that will keep older kids filled up throughout the day.

For the festive season before adding the flapjacks to the oven you can add some festive sprinkles or dark chocolate chips to the flapjacks, just make sure they are age appropriate.

    Storage instructions

Once the ginger flapjacks have cooled and at room temperature, you can store the flapjack recipe in airtight containers large or small, in the fridge for up to 5 days.

The British flapjacks can be stored in airtight containers or a freezer bag and kept in the freezer for up to 3 months. Great for bringing out when you need them!

To defrost the flapjacks bar from the freezer, leave the bars in the fridge overnight. Once defrosted they will keep for 3 days in an airtight container.

Do not re freeze, once defrosted.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Baking dish - A pink ceramic oven to table dish that is dishwasher and freezer safe.

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
