Can baby have oats from 6 months old

Yes, babies can have oats from around 6 months old, making them an excellent first food option.

Oats are gentle on a baby’s digestive system and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals essential for growth.

When introducing oats, it is important to prepare them in a soft, easily digestible form, such as finely ground or rolled oats cooked until very soft and mixed with breast milk, formula, or water to achieve a suitable consistency.

This allows babies to explore new textures while minimising choking risks.

Always introduce new foods one at a time and watch for any signs of allergies or intolerance.

    Ready made apple puree

Ready-made apple puree pouches can be a convenient option for baby-led weaning recipes, particularly when fresh apples are not readily available or time is limited.

They offer a smooth texture that is easy for babies to handle and can introduce them to the natural sweetness of fruit.

However, it is important to check the ingredients list to ensure there are no added sugars, preservatives, or artificial flavours, as these are best avoided in a baby’s diet.

While fresh, homemade purees are often preferable for nutritional value and taste, quality apple puree pouches can be a practical and safe supplement within a balanced BLW approach.

    Ingredient information

Oats - Rolled oats/quick oats are a great weaning ingredient and a great base for the oatmeal bars. If you wanted to blitz the oats in a food processor to make an oat flour you can.

Unsweetened applesauce - I have used an apple puree ready made pouch for the apple oat bar recipe, you can use a homemade applesauce if you prefer.

Flaxseed - Great for adding extra nutrition to many BLW recipes such as muffins and pancakes.

Cinnamon - Ground cinnamon adds a sweetness and subtle spice to the recipe. Plus cinnamon and apple goes so nicely together.

Yogurt - Greek yogurt is a great weaning ingredient. I have used the plain full-fat variety for the recipe.

    Serving suggestion

The oatmeal bars would be great served with extra Greek yogurt for dipping.

You could try adding a little extra apple purée, lemon juice or cinnamon or all to the yogurt for extra flavour.

Great for those with a sweet tooth.

You can spread a little smooth peanut butter on the bottom of the flapjacks for added nutrition. It may get messy but so yummy and enjoyable.

Other recipes you may like: Oaty bars, Teething biscuit, apple crumble or Oatmeal cookies.

    Storage instructions

Once the apple oatmeal bars have cooled and at room temperature, you can store the bars recipe in airtight containers large or small, in the fridge for up to 5 days.

The oatmeal applesauce bars can be stored in airtight containers or a freezer bag and kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Great for bringing out when you need them!

To defrost theapple pie oatmeal bars from the freezer, leave the bars in the fridge overnight. Once defrosted they will keep for 3 days in an airtight container.

Do not re freeze, once defrosted.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

6x6 inch dish - A stoneware baking dish that I find very versatile and use in lots of my recipes.

Airtight container- I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

    Notes

You can use other fruit purees for the recipe such as strawberry and apple puree or a mango puree.

Gluten-free oats can be used instead of the regular rolled oats if your little one has a sensitive tummy.
