The natural sweetness of apples makes them an appealing option for babies, encouraging them to explore new flavours and textures. Packed with essential vitamins, particularly vitamin C, apples support the immune system and overall growth.

    Ingredient information

Oats - I have used rolled outs for this delicious fritter recipe, I have blizted the oats in a Nutri bullet to make a fine oat flour. The recipe binds together this way perfectly.

Plain applesauce - I have used an applesauce but you can use apple puree from a baby food pouch or you can make your own puree using fresh apples. The best apple being peeled granny smith apples as they are crisp apples or cooking apples, cooking them and then blending in a food processor to make a smooth puree.

Flaxseed - I have added flaxseed the best way for added nutrition, you could leave this ingredient out if you prefer.

Butter - I have used a plant based unsalted butter for this recipe but you could use vegetable oil or avocado oil as well to keep the recipe plant based.

    Serving suggestion

The fritters would be great served alongside plain Greek or natural yogurt or whole milk in a cup for dipping or for plant based babies a plant-based milk such as almond milk. They can be a great snack or cosy dessert recipe.

You could also serve the homemade apple fritters with additional applesauce or you could serve with a cinnamon applesauce and chopped fruit such as mango strips, quartered strawberries or with a large apple cut into slices are all great options for an extra apple hit.

Other recipes you may like: Carrot fritters, Oatmeal cookies for baby or Teething biscuits.

    Storage instructions

The fritters once cooled to room temperature, can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If you wanted to reheat the fritters, you will only be able to reheat once from the fridge.

I would suggest heating them up in the oven on a baking sheet, at 180 degrees, for 15 minutes. Leave to cool before serving to your baby.

To store in the freezer, leave the fritters to cool and store in an airtight container or in an airtight freezer bag separated using parchment paper in a single layer. They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Once defrosted you won’t be able to refreeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

Frying pan - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.

Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

These fritters are great for baby-led weaning. They are great as a breakfast or great as snacks on the go.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Pop all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl or medium bowl and mix and combine together using a large spoon, slotted spoon or a spatula.
    2. Once mixed together, take approx a teaspoon of the fritter batter and roll into a ball using your hands. This will make a small fritter, if you prefer to make a large fritter, measure 1 tablespoon of the mixture.
    3. Place the butter into a frying pan and turn the heat on to a medium heat and then turn down to a medium-low heat.
    4. Place 4 of the fritters into the pan and press down using your fingers or a back of a spoon.
    5. Cook the fritters for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
    6. Leave to cool on a wire rack or cooling rack before serving to your baby.

    Notes

You could use other fruit purees as an alternative to applesauce if you prefer such as strawberry, blackberry, raspberry or blueberry.

Using these fruits will make the fritters a fun colour for babies and fussy toddlers and can mix things up from week to week.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
