How To Cook Sweet Potato For Baby Led Weaning
To cook sweet potato for baby led-weaning, start by washing and peeling the sweet potato thoroughly for this easy recipe from 6 months of age.
Cut it into thick, finger-sized sticks or sweet potato wedges to make it easy for little hands to hold, with no added salt.
Place the pieces on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and roast in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure even cooking.
Alternatively, you can steam the sweet potato chunks for around 15-20 minutes until they are soft enough to mash with gentle pressure from your fingers.
Always check the temperature before offering to your baby to avoid burns. The natural sweetness and soft texture make sweet potatoes an ideal first food for self-feeding.
Benefits of Sweet Potatoes For Babies
This root vegetable is an excellent great first food for babies due to their high nutritional value and natural sweetness, which often appeals to young palates.
They are rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, essential for healthy vision, immune function, and skin health.
Sweet potatoes contain fibre, which supports digestion and helps maintain regular bowel movements.
Their soft texture when cooked makes them easy for babies to chew and swallow, making sweet potatoes a practical and wholesome option for introducing solid foods during baby-led weaning.
Baby Food Sweet Potato Combinations
Sweet potato pairs wonderfully with a variety of flavours to create nutritious and delicious meals for babies.
Combining sweet potato with simple ingredients such as apple or pear adds natural sweetness and a smooth texture that is easy for little ones to enjoy.
For a savoury twist, mixing sweet potato with mild spices such as cinnamon or a hint of cumin can introduce gentle new tastes.
Blending sweet potato with vegetables like carrot or peas provides a balanced mix of vitamins and fibre.
Creamy bases like avocado or full-fat yogurt also enhance the texture and nutritional profile, making sweet potato combinations versatile and well-suited for baby led weaning.
Homemade Pizza For Baby
A homemade pizza with a sweet potato base is a better option for babies compared to store-bought pizza because it offers greater control over ingredients, ensuring the meal is fresh, nutritious, and free from unnecessary additives or preservatives.
Sweet potato provides a naturally sweet flavour and essential nutrients such as fibre, vitamins A and C, which support healthy growth and digestion.
A homemade base can be made without excess salt or sugar, which are commonly found in commercial pizzas.
This makes it a gentler and healthier choice for little ones starting on solids, aligning perfectly with the principles of baby led weaning.
Ingredient information
Sweet potato - Sweet potatoes are so yummy and sweet and make for a great base for a pizza. A great way to get an extra veggie into your little ones, and it is a great alternative to a usual looking pizza. You can add a little garlic powder for extra flavour or use a white potato instead.
Flour - I have used plain flour for this recipe, you can use a gluten-free flour or an almond flour or oat flour as gluten-free alternatives.
Cheese - I have used a mature grated cheddar cheese for this recipe, you could use a mix of both cheddar cheese or mozzarella.
Tomato puree - I have used a little tomato puree for the pizza base for this recipe which works really well for speed.
Serving suggestion
You could serve this with a Greek yogurt dip for the mango and coconut, and you could make a tomato sauce too if you prefer.
If you wanted to serve the pizzas as they are that would also be just as yummy!
Other recipes you may like: Pizza twists, Pizza bread muffin, Sweet potato fries, Sweet potato puree baby pancakes with sweet potato, or Pizza toastie.
Storage instructions
The pizzas can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an air-tight container.
If you wanted to freeze the pizzas for future meals, you will need to make sure that the pizzas have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container.
Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.
To defrost the pizzas, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.
To reheat, place the pizzas in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 4-5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.
Once the pizzas have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Baking tray - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
