Baby Porridge Fingers
Porridge fingers baby recipe are ideal for baby-led weaning from six months old because they offer a soft, manageable texture that is an easy way for little hands to hold and for babies to chew safely. It is a great finger food for baby and young children.
Made from simple ingredients like oats and water or milk, they provide essential nutrients such as fibre and iron, which are important for a growing baby.
Their mild flavour helps babies explore new tastes without overwhelming their developing palates.
Porridge fingers dissolve easily in the mouth, reducing the risk of choking while encouraging self-feeding and hand-eye coordination.
This makes them a practical and nutritious choice for introducing solids for a breakfast recipe or snack recipe from 6 months of age.
Oatmeal For Baby
Oatmeal is an excellent choice for babies practising baby-led weaning due to its smooth texture and mild flavour, which make it easy for little ones to handle and enjoy.
Rich in essential nutrients such as fibre, iron, and vitamins, oatmeal supports healthy digestion and growth. Its naturally soft consistency means it can be easily scooped up with fingers or a spoon, encouraging self-feeding skills and independence.
Oatmeal can be a great way to combine with a variety of fruits and vegetables, allowing for versatile and nutritious meal options that appeal to babies' developing palates. A similar idea to porridge fingers!
When Can Baby Eat Oats
Babies can typically start eating oats during baby-led weaning from around six months of age, once they have developed the necessary skills to handle solid foods and show readiness by sitting up independently and showing interest in food.
Oats are a great first food option as they are soft, easy to digest, and can be prepared in various textures suitable for babies, such as porridge or oat pancakes.
It is important to introduce oats in a form that is manageable for the baby to hold and eat safely, avoiding added sugars or salt.
Always observe for any signs of allergies or intolerances, introducing new foods one at a time.
Ingredient information
Oats - Porridge oats or steel cut oats are a great ingredient for baby led weaning. So many versatile recipes can be made including oaty bars or a simple porridge recipe. You can blitz the oats in a food processor for fine oats,
Milk - I have used regular milk for this recipe, you can use a dairy free alternative if you wanted to make the recipe dairy free and vegan for baby. You can also use breast milk too.
Flaxseed - I have used flaxseeds for added nutrition for the recipe. You cannot taste any difference so they are a great addition to many different recipes for baby.
Chia seeds - Adding chia seeds to the porridge fingers are a good idea and adds a little more nutrition to the recipe.
Banana - The banana works well as a sweetener and a binder for the recipe. You could use apple puree too if you like if your little one cannot have banana.
Raspberries - Adding raspberries to the recipe adds a hint of colour and of course flavour to the recipe.
Serving suggestion
The oatmeal fingers would be great served with a mango pot, a strawberry dessert or a peach melba!
They are great as a stand alone healthy nutritious snack for you and your baby.
Other recipes you may like: Carrot cake cookies, Oaty bars or Teething biscuits.
Storage instructions
The oat bars can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days, if stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the the bars, you will need to get yourself a freezer bag or an airtight container.
Make sure that which ever you choose are labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.
The oat bars will store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To defrost the oat bars, leave in the fridge overnight to defrost and make sure it is fully defrosted, before serving.
Once the oat bars have been defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Baking tin - A square, versatile non-stick baking tin suitable for roasting small meat joints, baking square cakes etc. Oven safe to 220°C and rust resistant.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
