    Can Babies Eat Millet Porridge

    Babies can eat millet porridge from around 6-8 months of age starting solid food, as it is a nutritious and easily digestible grain suitable for introducing solids as their first food that is an easily scoopable food.

    Cooked millet porridge baby recipe is rich in essential minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, which support a baby’s growth and development which is a healthy food.

    When preparing millet porridge for babies, it is important to cook it until very soft and blend or mash it to a smooth consistency to avoid any choking hazards. A great ingredient for baby’s diet.

    Always introduce new foods one at a time and monitor for any signs of allergies or intolerance.

    As with any first foods, millet porridge should complement breast milk or formula rather than replace it during this early stage.

    Millet vs Rice

    Millet and rice are both popular whole grains for introducing solid foods to babies from six months old, each offering distinct nutritional benefits for a balanced diet.

    These little baby grains are a nutrient-dense grain that offer health benefits and are rich in fibre, magnesium, and B vitamins, which support healthy digestion, heart health, brain health and energy production.

    It is also naturally gluten-free and less likely to cause allergies, making it a gentle option for sensitive tummies.

    Rice, particularly white rice, is easily digestible and often recommended for its low allergenic potential and soothing effects on the digestive system, but it is lower in fibre and micronutrients compared to whole millet.

    Brown rice is a great way to offer more essential nutrients but can be harder for some babies to digest early on.

    Overall, millet may provide a more nutrient-rich suitable option for babies learning to eat solids and is a different food to try which is a good thing.

    While rice remains a reliable, mild starter grain, so a combination or rotation of both can be beneficial.

    Ingredient information

    Millet - This is a great little grain and a great option for babies and toddlers. I have used millet flakes which break down really well when cooked with milk to make the porridge. You can also make other millet recipes such as finger foods to make millet finger food.

    Milk - I have used a whole milk cow’s milk but you can use your milk of choice for your baby such as oat milk, soy milk or almond milk.

    Apple puree - I have used a little apple puree to sweeten the porridge. Feel free to use a fruit or fruit puree of choice for the recipe.

    Serving suggestion

    You can add your baby’s favourite fruit purée or stewed fruit! I like to add In some cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg to flavour using spices sometimes.

    Storage instructions

    Once the milk is added to the milk porridge millet it can be left in the fridge for up to 2 days. Its best stored in an airtight container or travel container for on the go to keep fresh for a make ahead breakfast.

    You can also freeze the homemade baby cereal as well for up to 3 months in the freezer in a large airtight container or portion the uncooked porridge up into smaller airtight containers.

    Once you are ready to remove the homemade millet baby cereal from the freezer, all you will ned to do is leave to thaw in the fridge in the container, once defrosted fully, heat in the same way. Once heated you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.


    Equipment used to help with this recipe

    Large airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use. 

    Small airtight container - Just 180 ml storage capacity but very useful for leftovers and freezing small baby portions.

    Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

    This is a great 3 ingredient porridge recipe that can be ready in 10 minutes. A nutritious breakfast that can feed baby from 6 months old.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by pouring the millet flakes into a small saucepan followed by the milk.
    2. On a low heat gently heat the flakes and milk until you achieve a smooth thick consistency. This should not take too long as the mixture will thicken quite quickly.
    3. Stir in the apple puree and you are ready to serve.
    4. Make sure the porridge has cooled down before serving to your baby.

    Notes

    To make the recipe dairy free you can use a dairy milk such as oat milk or soy milk.

    You can use other fruit purees or mashed berries such as raspberries or strawberries.
