Is Cottage Cheese Good With Strawberries

Cottage cheese and strawberries are an excellent food to offer for baby-led weaning. Such simple ingredients that have a yummy flavour together.

It is soft and easy for babies to manage, providing a good source of protein and calcium essential for growth and development.

Strawberries contribute natural sweetness, as well as vitamin C and fibre, making this combination both nutritious and flavourful.

When serving, ensure the strawberries are cut into quarter pieces to reduce choking risk, and use full-fat cottage cheese to meet the higher fat requirements of infants.

This pairing encourages exploration of different textures and tastes, supporting healthy eating habits from an early age.

Is it OK For Babies To Have Cottage Cheese

Full fat cottage cheese can be introduced to babies from around 6 months old as part of a balanced diet, provided there are no known dairy allergies or intolerances.

It is a good source of protein, calcium, and healthy fats which are important for growth and development at this stage.

However, it should be offered in small, appropriately sized portions and alongside a variety of other nutrient-rich foods to ensure a well-rounded diet.

Always observe your baby for any adverse reactions when introducing new foods, and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

    Ingredient information

Cottage cheese - Cottage cheese is a great baby led weaning ingredient. I have used the full-fat variety instead of fat-free cottage cheese as this is best for baby for weaning from 6 months old. If your little one is not a fan of cottage cheese you can either blitz the whole recipe in a food processor to make a smooth consistency or just use the plain Greek yogurt.

Ripe strawberries - Fresh strawberries are great for weaning and so tasty for babies starting their weaning adventure. You can use defrosted frozen strawberries too.

Yogurt - I have used a plain full-fat Greek yogurt for the recipe. This is another great weaning ingredient for baby for BLW, great for those babies who like a sweet treat with that sweet tooth without the added sugar.

Peanut butter - I have used a smooth peanut butter for added nutrition and flavour, you can leave this ingredient out if you prefer for nut allergies.

    Serving suggestion

The best way to serve the recipe is on its own as an easy breakfast idea.

If you wanted to add a touch more sweetness to the pudding.

You could blend some fresh fruit such as raspberries with a splash of boiled water (from 6 months) to make a raspberry puree and swirl that through as well as the tastes from the strawberries, delicious!

Why not try adding in milled chia seeds for added nutrition and a little maple syrup (for babies over 12 months of age) instead of the peanut butter.

This recipe is great for the Mama’s too for a post-workout snack, a great high protein recipe for the whole family.

You could serve as part of a main meal alongside spaghetti bolognaise or cottage pie.

Other recipes you may like: Mango pots, Strawberry dessert or Peach melba pots.

    Storage instructions

You can store the easy recipe in small airlock containers or an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge!

If preferred you can store in the glass jar for a ready on the go snack! The recipe is ok to be served at room temperature for up to 1 hour out of the fridge.

This recipe can be frozen too for up to 3 months, you can store in air lock jars or air lock containers or even an air lock freezer bag for up to 3 months! The recipe can be kept frozen and used as a healthy strawberry ice cream treat as another serving idea next time.

To defrost, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure it has been fully defrosted before serving.

Once defrosted, you will not be able to refreeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Kilner jars - These are snack sized glass pots with easy push-on silicone lids which are water tight and leak-proof making them ideal for carrying light bites and snacks on-the-go.

Small airtight containers - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

This is a great make ahead on the go breakfast or snack for baby. Packed with protein this can be a complete meal option that baby will enjoy.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by washing and cutting the stalks off the strawberries
    2. Place the strawberries in a bowl and mash using a fork.
    3. Add the cottage cheese and yogurt to the strawberries and mix together using a spoon.
    4. Next, take your jar or small container and drizzle the peanut butter around the inside of the jar. If the peanut butter is hard you may need to pop into the microwave for 30 seconds or so to melt.
    5. Spoon the creamy strawberry mixture into the jar and top with more yogurt if you like and a strawberry for garnish (optional).

    Notes

You can just use a plain Greek dairy free yogurt for the recipe and leave out the cottage cheese for dairy free babies. Or you could use a dairy free cream cheese as a cottage cheese alternative.

Feel free to mix up the fresh berries used, raspberries work really well with this recipe along with blackberries.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
