    Baby Led Weaning Toast

A baby led weaning toast recipe is an excellent choice for babies from six months of age as it promotes self-feeding and helps develop fine motor skills with the perfect texture.

Toast offers a firm texture that is easy for little hands to hold and gnaw on, encouraging chewing without the need for teeth.

It also provides a neutral base that can be paired with various nutritious toppings like avocado or mashed banana, introducing new flavours and textures gradually for baby starting solid foods.

Toast is easy to prepare, making it a convenient option for parents while supporting babies in exploring independent eating safely.

You can use untoasted bread too if you like. Great options for your babies solid food feeding journey.

    Baby Led Weaning Meal

Toast is an excellent option for baby led weaning from around six months old because it is quick and easy to prepare, making mealtime stress-free for busy parents starting solids for the first time.

Its firm texture helps babies develop their chewing skills while offering a safe, manageable size for little hands to hold. A great way to get them practising.

Toast can be topped with a variety of nutritious spreads such as mashed avocado, hummus, or soft cheese, providing a balanced mix of flavours and nutrients.

Toast is versatile, affordable, and widely available, making it an easy way for introducing solids in a straightforward, enjoyable way.

    Finger Foods For Baby

Finger foods are an excellent choice for baby led weaning because they encourage independence and develop fine motor skills.

Offering small, manageable pieces allows babies to explore different textures and flavours at their own pace, promoting a positive relationship with food.

This approach also supports oral development by enabling babies to practise chewing and self-feeding, which can lead to improved dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Finger foods reduce the need for purees and spoon-feeding, making mealtimes less stressful for both baby and parent while a sense of confidence in the child is formed.

    Bread Choice For Baby

When selecting bread for a baby beginning baby-led weaning at around six months, it is important to choose breads that are soft, easy to chew, and free from added salt or sugar.

Opt for wholegrain or wholemeal varieties (if at all possible), as they provide more nutrients and fibre, supporting healthy digestion.

Avoid breads with seeds or hard crusts that might pose a choking hazard.

Sliced bread with a soft crumb can be offered in manageable strips or chunks that your baby can hold and self-feed.

Always ensure the bread is fresh and, if needed, lightly toasted to improve texture without making it too hard.

    Ingredient information

Bread - I have used the best bread which is wholemeal bread for this recipe, you can use a different type of bread such as white bread, whole wheat bread (whole grains such as whole grain breads are great for baby led weaning) or a sourdough bread or even a pitta bread for this recipe too, all are great for baby led weaning.

Cream cheese - Cream cheese is a great ingredient for baby led weaning. A quick ingredient ready to use for many different recipes for baby.

Flaxseed - This is a great ingredient to throw in many recipes such as porridge and muffin recipes.

Chia seeds - Chia seeds are a great ingredient for baby. You can soak the chia seeds before from 6 months old or simply sprinkle on top.

    Serving suggestion

This can be served on its own perfectly for baby-led feeding in different ways. If you did want to serve this with anything else, some cooked shredded chicken pieces to add some extra protein.

Or you could serve some plain natural Greek style yogurt to go alongside the toast with pineapple, or sweet potato wedges.

Other similar recipes: PB&J. Peanut and cheese twists, French toast or Tomato and mozzarella.

    Storage instructions

The toast strips can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days, stored in an airtight container.

If you wanted to freeze the toast you will need to make sure that the toast has cooled down at room temperature before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container.

It is best to freeze the toast without the cream cheese and toppings and add that to the defrosted toast.

Make sure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.

To defrost the toast, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted.

You will not be able to reheat the toast as the quality is not the same, but you will be able to eat chilled.

Once the toast has been defrosted you will not be able to refreeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

    Notes

If you wanted to make the recipe dairy free, you will just need to use a dairy free cream cheese.

Feel free to use other healthy toast toppings such as mashed avocado and lemon juice to make a avocado toast, mashed banana, peanut butter (great for b vitamins) almond butter, sunflower seed butter, pumpkin seed butter. All great for baby-led weaning and such delicious toppings.

Whole seeds are a choking hazard which is why nut and seed butters are great.

Just check the nut butters you are using are ones with no added sugar or added salt.

Nut butters are also great for top allergen introduction for any food allergy testing.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
