    Mashed potato recipe for babies

Mashed potatoes for babies are an excellent side dish and new food for babies from six months of age old starting on baby-led weaning for the first time.

This simple homemade baby food recipe requires just boiled potatoes, lightly mashed to a soft, lump-free consistency, making it easy for little hands to grasp and explore different textures safely.

This potatoes recipe provide essential carbohydrates for energy and are naturally gluten-free, making them gentle on a baby’s developing digestive system.

Mashed potatoes can be easily combined with other vegetables or proteins such as carrots and shredded chicken, offering versatile nutritional options while introducing babies to a variety of flavours and encouraging self-feeding skills, such an easy recipe.

    Potato benefits for babies

Potatoes are a great way for baby-led weaning babies due to their mild flavour and soft texture when cooked, making them easy for little ones to grasp and chew.

Rich in essential nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, and fibre, potatoes support healthy growth and digestion.

They provide a good source of carbohydrates, offering sustained energy for active babies, great for picky eaters too.

Potatoes are versatile and can be prepared in various ways – mashed, roasted into wedges, or steamed – allowing parents to introduce different textures and tastes while keeping meals simple and nutritious.

    Ingredient information

Potatoes - Potatoes are a great weaning ingredient for baby. So versatile and can be made into so many different recipes such as potato wedges or as part of a cottage pie. You can also use sweet potatoes or baby potatoes too.

Butter - I have used an unsalted butter for the recipe to add creaminess to the mashed potato, you can use sour cream instead. It makes the texture of the mashed potato so soft for baby. You could use olive oil as a dairy free alternative.

Milk - I have added a little milk to add extra creaminess to the mashed potato.

Or you could serve the mashed potato with fish fingers or black bean burgers.

The possibilities are endless, the mashed potato will work with most if not all meals!

    Storage instructions

The mashed potato can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days, in an airtight container.

You could freeze the potato in an airtight container or in a freezer bag for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Make sure it has cooled down to room temperature before transferring to container of choice.

To reheat the potato you can place in an oven proof dish and pop into the oven frozen on 180C or 350F, and bake for 20 minutes, leave to cool before serving to your baby.

Once baked from frozen the potato will not be able to be frozen again.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
