Is this smoothie ok for baby

Smoothies such as this cottage cheese fruit smoothie can be introduced to babies from around 6 months old, but only in small quantities and as part of a varied diet.

It’s important to ensure the simple ingredients are age-appropriate and finely blended to avoid any choking hazards.

For example, a simple smoothie made with ripe banana, avocado, and a little breast milk or formula can be a nutritious and tasty way for your baby to explore new flavours and textures in a healthy snack.

Always watch for any signs of allergies and consult your health care provider if you’re unsure.

What other fruits can be added into smoothie for baby

Instead of blueberries, a variety of other fruits can be used to make a delicious and nutritious fruit smoothie suitable for baby-led weaning.

Soft fruits like ripe bananas, peaches, or nectarines blend smoothly and are naturally sweet, making them ideal for little ones.

Pears and mangoes also work well as they have a mild flavour and creamy texture when blended.

For a slightly tangier taste, strawberries or raspberries can be introduced, though it’s important to watch for any signs of sensitivity.

Using a combination of these fruits can introduce diverse flavours and nutrients while keeping the smoothie simple and baby-friendly.

    Ingredient information

Milk - Milk-based smoothies are great. I have used a plain milk whole milk for this recipe. You can use your milk of choice dairy free alternative such as oat milk, coconut milk or almond milk.

Plain cottage cheese - This is a great weaning ingredient from 6 months old. The kind of cottage cheese you can use has to be plain. I have used a full-fat cottage cheese rather than a low fat cottage cheese as full fat is better for babies from 6 months old.

blueberries - Blitzed or squished blueberries are also a great weaning ingredient from 6 months old. You can use different fruits of your choice if you prefer.

Yogurt - A plain full-fat Greek yogurt is a great addition to your babies weaning list.

    Serving suggestion

The blueberry cottage cheese smoothie can be served on its own for an easy snack.

If you wanted to make this extra special for your family, you could use some squirting cream on top to make this a really indulgent dessert! A great way to mix things up.

This creamy cottage cheese smoothie could be a great mid afternoon delicious snack or as part of a breakfast or lunch, great for those picky eaters.

You could add in a little peanut butter or a tablespoon of chia seeds (milled) for an added protein hit with a sprinkling of ground flax seed. Both a good option.

Or a little maple syrup for older kids for added sweetness. A delicious way to make the recipe a bit different.

    Storage instructions

The smoothie can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, in an airtight bottle!

Or you could keep in an airtight container, it’s up to you!

Things may settle a little so make sure you shake the smoothie before you serve and drink!

You could freeze the smoothie, into a silicone ice cube tray, or in an airtight container!

You can store for up to 3 months in the freezer!

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Kilner jar - These are snack sized glass pots with easy push-on silicone lids which are water tight and leak-proof making them ideal for carrying light bites and snacks on-the-go.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.
