Coconut Milk In A Pasta Sauce

Coconut milk can be used as a substitute for cream in a coconut milk pasta sauce for babies practising baby-led weaning, offering a dairy-free simple sauce alternative with a creamy texture using a handful of ingredients.

When choosing coconut milk, opt for the full-fat variety without added sugars or salt to ensure it remains nutritious and suitable for young children.

It imparts a subtle, naturally sweet flavour which can complement many savoury dishes, but it’s important to consider any potential allergies and to introduce it gradually.

As with all new foods in BLW, observe the baby for any adverse reactions.

Coconut milk also has a different consistency compared to cream, so it may require slight adjustment of cooking time or additional thickening ingredients to achieve the desired sauce texture.

    Pasta For Babies

Pasta is great for baby led weaning because it’s soft and easy for babies to hold. Small shapes like shells, fusilli, or penne help babies feed themselves and build their motor skills.

Pasta has a mild taste, so you can add healthy sauces and veggies for balanced meals.

Cook it until very soft to make it safe and easy to chew for babies starting solids, A great ingredient for those busy weeknights.

    Ingredient information

Olive oil - I have used a bit of olive oil to brown the onions for this coconut milk pasta sauce recipe, you can use coconut oil or avocado oil instead.

Pasta - I have used penne pasta as this is a great pasta for baby-led weaning. You can use other pasta such as Fusilli, Rigatoni or Conchiglie. Feel free to use a whole wheat pasta too.

Onion - I have used a little red onion to add flavour and texture to the pasta, you can use a yellow onion or you could use onion granules instead for a quick and easy meal.

Tomato - I have used a little fresh tomato for this recipe to add colour and vibrance to the recipe. You can use a tablespoon of tomato puree instead.

Garlic - I have used garlic powder for this recipe but you can use 1-2 garlic cloves crushed or grated.

Canned coconut milk - I have used a small can of full-fat coconut milk for this recipe which is the perfect size for a meal for 2. Try not to use light coconut milk as babies need the calories. You could use coconut cream too if you have this.

    Serving suggestion

The creamy pasta sauce would be great served with a sprinkling of grated cheddar cheese or grated mozzarella cheese or a little of both. Or to keep the dish vegan try adding a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.

You could serve the creamy sauce pasta recipe with extra veggies such as broccoli florets, green beans or carrot batons.

Other recipes you may like: Boursin tomato pasta, cheesy broccoli pasta or creamy pasta in pumpkin sauce.

    Storage instructions

The creamy coconut pasta can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 day, stored in an airtight container.

If you wanted to freeze the vegan coconut milk pasta sauce, you will have to store into an airtight container or in a freezer bag. You can store the pasta in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To defrost the creamy tomato pasta sauce you will need to leave in the fridge overnight until fully thawed.

The pasta once defrosted will keep in the fridge for 1 day.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
