    Can Babies Have Cheese Sauce

Cheese sauce for babies can be part of their baby-led weaning diet, provided that the ingredients used are suitable for their age and dietary needs. Great for those babies who have a love of great food!

Homemade cheese sauce can be an excellent base for many dishes, adding flavour and creaminess to vegetables such as cauliflower and broccoli, as well as pasta. This can be a better alternative than a packet cheese sauce.

Using a mild cheese such as cheddar cheese or mozzarella and ensuring the sauce is not salty makes it a nutritious and appealing option that encourages babies to explore different textures and tastes while enjoying a balanced meal.

Always introduce new foods gradually and watch for any signs of intolerance or allergy.

Is Melted Cheese Ok For Baby

Melted cheese can be appropriate for baby-led weaning when prepared carefully to ensure safety and ease of eating for little tummies.

In this cheese sauce recipe, the cheese is completely melted to create a smooth, creamy texture that is gentle for little ones to handle. Great for that little foodie.

Fully melting the cheese reduces the risk of small, hard bits that could pose a choking hazard, making it a suitable accompaniment or dip for soft vegetables and finger foods commonly offered during BLW, great for picky eaters.

Always ensure the cheese used is mild, pasteurised, and introduced gradually to monitor for any potential allergies.

    Ingredient information

Butter - I have used an unsalted block butter for this recipe. I find that this is great for flavour. You could use olive oil for dairy free babies.

Flour - I have used a plain flour to create the roux for this recipe, you could use a self raising flour too.

Milk - I have used a whole milk for this recipe, you could use a plant based alternative such as oat milk for the recipe for dairy free babies.

Full-fat cheese - I have used a mature cheddar cheese for this recipe. This is great for flavour for the recipe. You could use a mild cheddar cheese with a dollop of cream cheese.

Nutmeg - I have added a pinch of nutmeg for the cheese sauce for added flavour.

Bay leaf - I have used a bay leaf for added flavour to the cheese sauce.

    Serving suggestion

This easy homemade sauce is great served as a pasta sauce with penne or my son’s favourite, spaghetti!

I break up the spaghetti into small pieces so it is easily eaten as soft lumps and great as a lumpy texture. You can do this from 7 months.

Orzo pasta works really well too! You could serve along side some dark green vegetables and vegetables to make a broccoli mac or cauliflower cheese and green beans.

Grated cheese served on top is delicious too. Great dinner ideas for baby and older kids too!

Other great baby pasta recipes: Orzotto, tuna pasta bake, garlic and herb pasta.

    Storage instructions

The cheesy white sauce for baby can be kept in an airtight container and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days in the fridge. Make sure that the sauce has cooled down to room temperature before transferring to the fridge.

You could also transfer the easy cheese sauce into small airtight containers to portion and keep in the fridge for the same time. Or you could transfer to large ice cube trays and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

When you want to defrost the homemade sauce, you will need to leave in the fridge overnight until fully frosted.

To reheat the sauce, place in a saucepan and heat for 10 minutes.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

Easy Cheesy Cheese Sauce For Babies and Kids Recipe

    Yield: 4
    Author: Lindsay
Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 25 Min

This is a really easy cheese sauce to make for baby and the whole family too! You can also easily make the recipe dairy free with a few swaps.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by adding the butter to a medium saucepan and melt on a low heat.
    2. Add the flour to the butter and mix together to a smooth paste. I find using a spatula works best. Cook the flour for a minute or so, and make sure you have a low heat.
    3. Next, pour in 125ml of the milk and stir into the butter and flour, you may need to turn up the heat at this point to a medium heat. You can add in the bay leaf, nutmeg and black pepper at this point too.
    4. Once all the milk has absorbed add in another 125ml of milk. Stir in the milk until the milk has absorbed and the sauce is thickening.
    5. Add in the remaining 125ml of milk along with the cheese and mix together until the cheese has melted.
    6. When you are ready to serve remove the bay leaf.
    7. You can add pasta, fish, broccoli or cauliflower to the sauce.

    Notes

You can easily make the recipe dairy free, all you will need to do is replace the butter, milk and cheese for plant based alternatives. A great way to mix things up too!

The key is to take your time with this recipe and adjust the hob temperature when required.

Hope you and your whole family enjoy!
