What sandwiches can babies have
Babies practising baby-led weaning can enjoy a variety of sandwiches as long as the ingredients are safe and appropriate for their age.
Soft bread, such as wholemeal or white sliced bread with the crusts removed, is ideal to prevent choking hazards.
A baby sandwich filling should be simple, nutritious, and easy to handle, such as mashed avocado, cream cheese, or hummus.
Soft-cooked vegetables like grated carrot or sweet potato can add texture and flavour, while finely shredded cooked chicken or fish can provide protein.
It’s important to avoid added salt, sugar, honey, and any hard or sticky ingredients that might pose a choking risk.
Cutting the sandwich into manageable finger-sized pieces encourages self-feeding and exploration of flavours.
Cream cheese and strawberry for baby
Cream cheese and strawberry make a yummy combination for baby-led weaning.
The creamy texture of the cream cheese pairs well with the natural sweetness and slight tartness of ripe strawberries, creating a flavourful and nutritious snack.
Both ingredients are rich in vitamins and healthy fats, supporting your baby's growth and development.
Ensure the strawberries are soft, ripe, and cut into manageable pieces to reduce any choking risk, while using full-fat, plain cream cheese for maximum nutritional benefit.
This simple blend encourages exploration of flavours and textures, making it an excellent choice for introducing fresh fruit alongside dairy in your baby's diet.
Ingredient information
Slice of bread - I have used a whole grain bread for this recipe, you can use a sliced white bread if you wanted to use a softer bread and you can remove the crusts if you prefer for your baby.
Strawberries - Strawberries are great for this recipe, and a great weaning ingredient. A great alternative to jam for baby.
Cream cheese - Cream cheese is great for sandwich fillings as a quick finger foods weaning recipe for baby when you are in a hurry,
Serving suggestion
This sandwich can be served on its own perfectly as an easy lunch for a 6 month old and great for older kids too.
You could use a smooth peanut butter instead of the cream cheese if you prefer to make a PB&J style sandwich.
If you did want to serve the sandwich with anything else, some cooked shredded leftover chicken, a slice of cheese, both are a great way to add some extra protein. Or simply cucumber slices and extra strawberries.
Or you could serve some plain natural Greek style yogurt to go alongside the pineapple and mint. Delicious!
Other similar recipes: PB&J. Peanut and cheese twists, Grilled cheese sandwich or Tomato and mozzarella.
Storage instructions
The yummy cream cheese and strawberry sandwich can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, if stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the the cheese sandwiches, you will need to get yourself a freezer bag or an airtight container.
Make sure that which ever you choose are labelled with the item and the date.
I use masking tape to label the airtight container. The sandwich will store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To defrost the sandwich, leave in the fridge overnight to defrost and make sure it is fully defrosted, before serving.
Once the sandwich has been defrosted you will not be able to reheat.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
