Are Kidney Beans ok For Baby

Kidney beans can be introduced to babies during baby led weaning once they are around 6 months old, provided they are cooked thoroughly and prepared appropriately.

They are great in this kidney bean recipe vegetarian curry, using simple ingredients.

Raw or undercooked kidney beans contain toxins that can cause digestive upset, so it is essential to soak and boil them well until soft or you can use canned kidney beans which are already cooked.

When served, beans should be mashed or offered as part of a soft, manageable texture to reduce the risk of choking.

Kidney beans are a good source of plant-based protein, fibre, and essential nutrients, making them a healthy addition to a varied diet for babies beginning solids.

Always monitor your baby closely when introducing new foods and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about allergies or digestion.

How To Serve Kidney Beans For Baby

To safely serve kidney beans to a baby for baby-led weaning, it is essential to cook the beans thoroughly until they are very soft, as raw or undercooked kidney beans contain toxins that can cause illness.

Begin by soaking dried kidney beans overnight, then rinse them well before boiling vigorously for at least 10 minutes to eliminate harmful substances.

Once cooked, mash or serve whole beans only if they are soft enough for the baby to handle, ensuring they pose no choking hazard.

Avoid adding salt, sugar, or strong spices, and always supervise the baby closely during mealtime.

Introducing kidney beans in small amounts can also help monitor for any possible allergic reactions.

Can Baby Have Canned Kidney Beans

Canned kidney beans can be suitable for baby-led weaning (BLW) as long as they are prepared properly.

It is important to rinse them thoroughly to remove excess salt and any preservatives.

Kidney beans should be cooked until very soft to reduce the risk of choking and aid digestion.

Always ensure the canned beans are cut or mashed into appropriate sizes for your baby’s age and chewing ability.

Introducing kidney beans can provide valuable protein and fibre, making them a nutritious choice for little ones starting on solids.

However, always observe for any signs of intolerance or allergy when introducing new foods.

What To Serve With Kidney Bean Curry

Serve kidney bean curry with soft-cooked vegetables such as sweet potato or carrot sticks, which are ideal for baby-led weaning due to their manageable size and texture.

Mild naan bread or small portions of fluffy rice also complement the curry well, providing a neutral base that balances the flavours.

Ensure all items are cut into appropriate sizes for your baby to hold and self-feed safely.

Including avocado slices or small chunks of steamed broccoli offers added nutritional variety and different textures to explore.

    Ingredient information

Olive oil - I have used an extra virgin olive oil, but you can use an unsalted butter instead which will add more flavour to the recipe.

Kidney beans - I have used tinned tender kidney beans, you could use other beans if you prefer such as black beans or pinto beans for this easy recipe.

Onion - I have used a white onion for this recipe but you can use a red onion or yellow onion or even onion powder for convenience.

Garlic - I have used one garlic clove for this recipe but you can use a teaspoon of garlic granules or garlic powder if you prefer for convenience.

Tomato paste - I have used tomato paste for the recipe, this is a great ingredient to make a quick sauce especially for curries.

Curry powder - I have used a no added salt curry powder for this recipe. Just the spices and nothing else.

Cumin and coriander - These spices are great for so many different recipes but for curries they are great.

    Serving suggestion

This curry recipe would be great served with either white or brown rice, bulgar wheat (which is what I have served it with), or a jacket potato. This recipe would make a yummy jacket topper.

You could also add a dollop of plain Greek yogurt to the top of the curry to make a creamy addition to the recipe that babies will love.

Other vegan recipes you may like: Black eyed peas curry, One-pot sweet potato curry or Aubergine Bhaji for baby led weaning.

    Storage instructions

This kidney bean curry can be frozen for up to 3 months in the freezer or up to 3 days in the fridge.

I like to get some small airtight containers to store this in the freezer with some rice or bulgar wheat. You can also use a freezer bag too for easier flatter storage.

But stored on its own as well is just as good and you can offer more of a variety alongside if desired.

To safely defrost the curry, leave in the fridge overnight in an airtight container until fully defrosted.

To reheat, place the curry into a saucepan or large pot, and reheat on a medium high heat.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
